Teaching English in Hong Kong Schools · 32 days ago

Hong Kong is an international trading city which plays an important role in the global economy. Although English is an official language in the Special Administrative Region, 98% of its population are Chinese and the majority of the time Cantonese is spoken both in the workplace and at home.

After the return of Hong Kong to China in 1997, the then government made all but 20% of government schools change their medium of instruction to Cantonese. Some of the decision was linked to the handover to the Mainland and thus the importance of the Chinese language, but there was also a feeling that since Cantonese was used so much outside school that students would actually do better in their academic studies if they were taught in Cantonese.

Unfortunately, after almost ten years of this system, a research study at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, led by Prof. Tsang Wing-kwong of the Department of Educational Administration and Policy, found that students taught in Chinese medium schools did far worse than their English taught counterparts in several academic attainment criteria. They also had a much lower chance of getting into University.

The system has now been changed and many more schools are allowed to use English. But how long will it take for students to improve their English. And what about the students that graduated in the period from 1997 to 2008? How are they going to compete against their English taught counterparts?

Since English is so important ion the workplace and for career advancement, the best way is to take an English course to gain confidence in speaking as well as improve English business writing skills.

HKEnglish.com provides a range of Business English Courses including Oral Business English (speaking and listening), Business writing and grammar Business Presentation Skills, Preparation for Job Interviews.

Hong Kong schools to teach in English again · 48 days ago

After almost ten years of being banned from using English as the medium of instruction, secondary schools in Hong Kong are to be allowed to teach curriculum in English once again.

This reverses an order instigated by the former Chief executive in 1998 after the handover to mainland China. After this directive just over 100 schools were allowed to use English as the medium of instruction.

This positive move comes as the standard of English language proficiency in Hong Kong has fallen to unbelievably low levels. Hong Kong is an international city and most of its trade is external so English is vitally important if Hong Kong is to survive in the global marketplace.

Schools will now be able to choose to teach in English on a class by class basis as long as the majority of their students can pass an English test to make sure that they are up to learning in English.

Learning English is a lifelong activity. Even if you have finished school its not too late to improve your English language proficiency. The most effective way is to enrol in a high quality English language course.

Canada Immigration uses the IELTS test · 50 days ago

Canada may introduce the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam as an accepted test for English level soon.

Right now, you have to prove your ability in English and the IELTS test is perhaps the easiest way to do this.

This brings Canada into line with Australia and the United Kingdom which also use IELTS as a filter for their own immigration systems.

Canada already uses the IELTS academic stream test to filter applicants for its universities, so its not surpassing that they have chosen to use the same test for immigration purposes.

The General Training Stream test used for immigration is easier than the academic stream, however. Although the speaking and listening components are the same for both academic and general streams, then the reading and writing components are different and easier.

In the general training (immigration) writing test, for instance, you only have to write a simple letter rather than write a report to a university lecturer describing complicated statistics or graphs. The reading texts are also easier and are the sort of things you would expect to see in daily life such as newspaper articles or instruction booklets.

Although grammar is assessed there are no difficult grammar questions such as you find find in other English tests like TOEFL. Everything in IELTS is based on your ability to use the fours English skills – Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking.

If you are planning to apply for immigration to Canada then its a good time to start improving your English and preparing for the IELTS exam. The easiest way to prepare for your IELTS exam is by taking an IELTS preparation course with a qualified, native English tutor experienced in the IELTS exam.

HKEnglish.com runs regular IELTS preparation courses which are customized to your exact needs. Click here to contact them now

Learning English vocabulary · 50 days ago

Words are the building blocks of the English language. They enable you to accurately communicate your ideas in English either in writing or orally. Many Chinese students find great difficulty in communicating in English because of a restricted range of vocabulary.

One of the best ways to improve your vocabulary is to read. Be careful that you select something interesting to read that you will be motivated to read after the first few pages. There are many English novels to enjoy or inspirational books (such as the “Don’t sweat” series) that you can also learn from.

For lower level learners there are Graded Readers that have been edited to build up your vocabulary gradually. You can find them at any good book store – just do an internet search and you will find many titles.

Avoid reading newspapers all the time since this is usually “bad news” and not that motivating. However, if you are in a specific industry then reading an English trade magazine can help you perform better in your job as the words used will be specific for your particular workplace situation.

Try to read without resorting to a dictionary all the time.
If you do need to use a dictionary then do it – but not all the time as you will soon get tired or bored with this laborious process.

Be sure to keep a pocket-sized vocabulary book to record the new words. Then try to use the new words daily over a period of a week or so. Revise the words in two weeks time, in a month and 3 months later. Always keep the book with you and refer to it often.

Try to learn 10 new words every day. In that way you will have extended your English vocabulary by 3650 words!

Start improving your English today. And if you need to practice and have expert guidance, then one-to one private tuition is your best bet. HKEnglish.Com provides the highest Quality English Tuition in Hong Kong, HK SAR and all its English tutors are experienced, native speakers.
