Typical English Class of 20 Students

In a normal classroom you just listen to the teacher and work through a textbook. The textbook is chosen by the school for a general class of students that fall into various broad bands of capabilities. It doesn't matter if your listening and writing is a better than your reading and speaking; all the units in the book will be the same level.

You want to speak to the teacher and get their guidance, but will actually work with other students most of the time who may have better or worse English than you. There is very little opportunity for you to talk with the teacher to practice your oral Englsih or even ask questions. What is worse is that it is the other students that will be giving you feedback on your speaking and writing, abd even giving you the wrong explanation!

No class ever has 20 students with the same level, so all the courses have to be “general”. Some students will find the tasks easy, finish early and then get bored. Other students who are not so proficient will find the tasks difficult and not be able to finish them.

The teacher spends most of the time organizing activities and making sure that everyone is working and monitoring the progress of the exercises being done. Since time is limited the poorer students may not be able to finish activities on time.

In a one-hour class with 30 students the teacher will only have only have a maximum of 2 minutes per student! In reality, it is much less, since the teacher is spending time organizing the class and monitoring progress.
