Survey Reveals Difficulties in Using English at Work in Hong Kong

A survey by HKEnglish.com has recently revealed the difficulties of Hong Kong citizens in using English at work. It has shown that almost two thirds of the respondents had difficulty in speaking and understanding the English language in the workplace. Most of the respondents found difficulty in conveying their messages in English when giving business presentations. In addition, a majority also found difficulty in using English whilst socializing with foreign business partners during business dinners and other corporate events. When it came to written English, the survey revealed that the major difficultly for employees was with writing business reports.
The results of the survey suggest that many people in Hong Kong find it difficult to communicate in English at work. It follows that companies in Hong Kong should concentrate on running specialized English language training & development programs for their staff that could help alleviate the specific difficulties highlighted in the survey. Communicating in English is deemed important most especially for businesses that have foreign investors.

To address the issue, HKEnglish.com helps people in Hong Kong to learn English through their various English language services. The company provides corporate English language courses as well as business soft skills training programs such as presentation skills courses. Their programs aim to help business owners and Hong Kong individuals have effective English language communication skills.
"The results of this survey will help the focus of corporate English language and business soft skills training in Hong Kong and therefore help both companies and employees improve their business communication skills," Ian Nock, Director of Studies at HKEnglish.com said

HKEnglish Supports the Plain English Campaign in Hong Kong

April 22, 2013 -- HONG KONG - HKEnglish.com, a leading provider of private English tuition and corporate business English training in Hong Kong, has announced its support for the Plain English Campaign, due to its commitment to improving the quality of written business communication across the globe.
Although Western governments and corporations have adopted the Plain English Writing Style, most organisations in Hong Kong continue to use an archaic and antiquated writing style that is hard to understand. Plain English encourages the use of uncomplicated grammatical structures, everyday words and short sentences instead of their complicated counterparts.
Ian Nock, Director of Studies at HKEnglish.com, said "We are delighted to be part of this campaign. Plain English saves time and money because readers are able to understand the meaning without explanation.”
The Plain English Campaign was founded more than 30 years ago in the UK with an aim to fight against incoherent government reports and documents. In 2010, the Plain Writing Act was brought into law in the US along with the US Federal Plain Language Guidelines (2011). The US Securities and Exchange Commission has published its own guide to Plain English and the rules require some parts of prospectuses to be written in Plain English.
"Plain English is the business and governmental writing of the future. It should be implemented across the board by banks, law firms, insurance companies, financial services providers and government departments to enable clarity of meaning." Nock said.
HKEnglish.com aims to provide the best English language services for Asia and Hong Kong by providing in-house company English tuition, private English tuition, corporate training as well as proofreading and editing services. The company has a wide range of business writing and corporate business writing training programs customised to meet everyone’s exact learning needs.
Established in 2001, HKEnglish.com has experienced and qualified native English teachers and expert business writing trainers that provide clients a professional and effective English language learning experience. The company’s 1 to 1 English courses include business English, oral English, social English, intonation and pronunciation, English for presentations, exam preparation, preparation for study abroad, IELTS, academic English and TOEFL. HKEnglish.com also offers free resources for learning this language. The company designs the course content around the client’s specific English learning needs as it understands that every student is different and has his or her own weaknesses and strengths.
