IELTS Speaking Exam – Strategies for Successful High Marks

IELTS speaking exam course hongkong

Students from Hong Kong have a hard time getting high scores in English speaking & writing.

In order to score anything between 7, 7.5, and 8, it is essential to know about the test structure and requirements. For this reason it is very important to undergo a preparation course for IELTS. The course must be facilitated by a native English speaker. Besides, it is also preferable that the teacher is an IELTS examiner.

What makes the writing test component of the IELTS difficult is its wide scope since it covers sentence structure, vocabulary, grammar, content, cohesion, and organization.

IELTS Speaking Paper

Each question presented by the examiner is an invitation for you to respond. There are questions answerable by a “yes” or a “no.” However, you need to give them enough so that they can determine the level of your skill. That requires a more detailed answer. There is no penalty for talking too much. If you don’t talk enough you risk getting a low score.

The questions are designed to target specific language skills. Examiners want to know what you can do. If you want to get a good score, listen while the question is being asked and settle on the language style. You also need to pay attention to grammar use. In your reply, it is best to use the same grammar and language style. That is what the examiners expect.

You will do very well if you prepare enough. In fact, part one and two will mostly revolve around you. You will be asked to share your experiences and opinions so you’d better be ready to impart your personal knowledge. Think about your preferences, likes, and dislikes more deeply. Think about the area where you live, the places that you have visited, and the people you know.

Another important criterion that examiners have in their checklist is accuracy. But that is just one of the many, so don’t fret too much about it. If you can’t think of the right answer immediately, start replying. Just paraphrase later if you think the answer is wrong. The examiners will take note of this.

In Part three you will be required to give your opinion. When you are asked for your perspective, do so in a professional way and approach it more generally rather than from a deeply personal point-of-view.
