Academic Essay Writing tutor

Academic Essay Writing tutor

In Canada and the United States, writing tutor is the common term used for individuals working one-on-one with students in college and university writing centers. The terms tutor and consultant are often used interchangeably, and both terms are used with deliberation as they are seen to represent a specific relationship, role, or activity between tutor and tutee. For example, Griffin, Keller, Pandey, Pedersen, and Skinner in their 2003-2004 survey of North American writing centers describe a tutor as an expert providing a less expert learner with knowledge, implying a transmission approach.

In contrast, the consultant, also expert, collaborates with the tutee in addressing the writing task, implying a
social constructivist approach. Others who use the term writing tutor describe the tutor as facilitating learning through active listening, responding, as well as using silence and wait time. Taking the cue from the student, these writing tutors function much like the consultants described by Griffin et al., offering suggestions and working together on a given writing task.

Regardless of the title, the intent and actions of the tutor are important to writing centre practitioners. A tutor may say he/she is acting collaboratively with the student and unknowingly be enforcing her or his own agenda.

College Scholarships Application

College Scholarships Application

by: Alex Yew

If you have decided that you would like to apply for a scholarship then you will need to start by finding one. You will also need to apply early because you do not want to be rushed and pressured to get your application in on time. If you have really good grades and you have been able to maintain them for most of your academic career then you will want to look for academic scholarships. But, if you are really good in sports then this is where you may want to focus your attention and you will want to conduct a search for these types of scholarships. Just take your time. You will find a large list of different scholarships online, at your local library or even from yours school counselor. However, they may not know about all of them so it does not hurt for you to do some of the researching on your own.

Take some time and really think about your positive qualities. What are you good at? What do people like about you? Do you have any experience or hobbies that make you special or help you stand out from others? What makes you the best person for the scholarship that you are looking at? If you are able to write these things down then you will be more prepared for the entire process when you are ready to start applying and completing applications. It is always best to brainstorm anyways because you will not feel stuck the further along you get.

Once you have your large list of available scholarships you will need to get ready to apply. You should never ever start this process without taking your time and reading through all of the qualifications and directions very carefully. You may also find a large amount of small print on the pages and you must be sure that you are reading that as well.

Something that you should look for when it comes to reading the application is to search for anything that says if you will be given special consideration for any work that you have completed in the past. For example, if you volunteered you may be able to write an essay about that and it can really improve your chances of getting the scholarship over those individuals that did not volunteer and that do not have any experience. Always look for different ideas like this in the directions.

Many of the scholarships that you find and that you will be applying for are going to require you to apply in the form of an essay. Always have someone read through what you have prepared to ensure that the questions were answered completely and that your spelling and grammar is correct. You will make a very poor impression if you do not do this and your essays are incomplete.

As you can see, it can be very easy to apply for scholarships as long as you are taking your time. You may be a little bit concerned about this in the beginning but the more scholarships that you apply for the more you will be learning. It becomes easier the more that you do it and you will find that you will be more relaxed as time goes by.

You never want to let your nerves get the better of you and you should never give up just because you are unsure about something. What you need to remember is that in many cases you may never meet the individuals that are giving you the grant. So, you should just try to relax and put in your best effort. If you do not succeed then no one needs to know. You can just apply for the next one and try even harder. Always try to find out why you did not get the scholarship because this can really help you determine what you may be able to do differently on the next one that you apply for. You can learn from your mistakes and that can really help you in the future if you are willing to turn a negative into a positive when it comes to your college career and your life goals.

Teaching English in Hong Kong Schools

Teaching ESL English In Hong Kong Primary & Secondary Schools

Hong Kong is an international trading city which plays an important role in the global economy. Although English is an official language in the Special Administrative Region, 98% of its population are Chinese and the majority of the time Cantonese is spoken both in the workplace and at home.

After the return of Hong Kong to China in 1997, the then government made all but 20% of government schools change their medium of instruction to Cantonese. Some of the decision was linked to the handover to the Mainland and thus the importance of the Chinese language, but there was also a feeling that since Cantonese was used so much outside school that students would actually do better in their academic studies if they were taught in Cantonese.

Unfortunately, after almost ten years of this system, a research study at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, led by Prof. Tsang Wing-kwong of the Department of Educational Administration and Policy, found that students taught in Chinese medium schools did far worse than their English taught counterparts in several academic attainment criteria. They also had a much lower chance of getting into University.

The system has now been changed and many more schools are allowed to use English. But how long will it take for students to improve their English. And what about the students that graduated in the period from 1997 to 2008? How are they going to compete against their English taught counterparts?

Since English is so important ion the workplace and for career advancement, the best way is to take an English course to gain confidence in speaking as well as improve English business writing skills.

Top Tips for Effective Reading at University and Academic English Course in Hong Kong HK SAR

Reading SKills - Improve your reading

Reading is one of the most challenging aspects of university and college life. It is also a very important skill to master in order for you to study effectively and to be able to complete all of the reading on time.

At undergraduate level there may be a pile of books a foot high to read though. However at postgraduate level the amount of reading you have to do increases sharply. Not only do you have to digest textbooks but you have also have to plough through endless research papers.

Neither of these texts are easy reading. They are information heavy and often need referral to a previous section or chapter for the meaning to be understood.

Top Tip for Effective Reading

Tip #1 – The SQ3R method

At school you learnt the 3R’s: Reading, wRiting and aRithmetic and one very good way to read effectively is to use another set of 3R’s – the SQ3R method:

*S Survey the text

Skim over the paragraph titles, topic sentences and get an overall idea of what the author is trying to convey. For research papers read through the abstract more carefully to understand what to expect later on.

*Q Change the headings into questions.

Ask “W” questions: what, why, who, when and how (okay that is an “h”!). For example change “Plant growth in the Arctic” to “Why do plants grow in the Arctic?”

*R Read

Read one section of the time whilst trying to answer the question you set yourself in the previous step. Use the Active Reading** strategies and make notes. **Active reading strategies will be detailed in the next article and make notes.

*R Recall

After you have finished try to remember as much as you can about the text. Try to summarise the meaning in your head.

*R Review

Go over your questions and see if you have answered them well. Is there anything that is still unclear? If not, perhaps write a new question.
