In Canada and the United States, writing tutor is the common term used for individuals working one-on-one with students in college and university writing centers. The terms tutor and consultant are often used interchangeably, and both terms are used with deliberation as they are seen to represent a specific relationship, role, or activity between tutor and tutee. For example, Griffin, Keller, Pandey, Pedersen, and Skinner in their 2003-2004 survey of North American writing centers describe a tutor as an expert providing a less expert learner with knowledge, implying a transmission approach.

In contrast, the consultant, also expert, collaborates with the tutee in addressing the writing task, implying a
social constructivist approach. Others who use the term writing tutor describe the tutor as facilitating learning through active listening, responding, as well as using silence and wait time. Regardless of the title, the intent and actions of the tutor are important to writing centre practitioners. A tutor may say he/she is acting collaboratively with the student and unknowingly be enforcing her or his own agenda.

In Part 1 we looked at the essential planning stage of writing academic essays. Here we continue our look at academic essay writing, and this time focus on the writing stage.

(3) Write the introduction

The introduction should begin with an interesting sentence to get the readers attention.
After this first sentence, add the thesis statement.
Use one sentence to introduce every following body paragraph.
Finish the introductory paragraph with a short summary or what you intend to achieve in the essay e.g. “In this paper I will discuss….”
(4) Write the body paragraphs

In each of the body paragraphs (usually a minimum of 2 or 3) the ideas you presented in the introductory paragraph are developed.Expand your body paragraphs by giving detailed information and examples remembering to include the source / citation.
Body paragraphs should expand the central idea and at the end of each body paragraph there should be a short summary.
There should be at least two examples or facts in each body paragraph to support the overall idea of the essay.
(5) Write the conclusion

This summarizes your essay only.
Begin the summary paragraph by quickly going over the main ideas of your body paragraphs once more
The next to last sentence should reiterate your basic idea of the essay.
Do not introduce new material, examples or citations into the concusion
The final sentence may include a suggestion.
(6) Proofread & Edit your essay

Check your own work for common grammar errors, spelling and punctuation.
Examine your work for cohesion - do the ideas blend together?
Examine the organisation - do the ideas flow logically?
Its a good idea to get a freind to look over your work as well to give feedback.
Check that you have included all necessary citations.
The final sentence may include a suggestion.
(7) Write the reference list

This should follow the conventions used by your institution - if in doubt ask
If no convention has been applied the Harvard or APA Referencing Systems are good ones to use

Academic essays may be divided into two main categories - descriptive and argumentative. For science you are most likely to have to write descriptive essays e.g. “Explain how raw plant materials may be formulated into tablets”.

Argumentative essays, where you express your opinion, may sometimes be required e.g. “The use of cloned animals in human medicines is cruel and should be abolished.”

Usually you will be given topics around material that has been covered in lectures. However, using lecture notes alone will not be good enough. Even worse is copying verbatim from these notes! You need to read around the subject, including the set books and other external sources such as research papers and journals.

In Part 1 we will look at perhaps the most important stage: planning your essay. In Part 2 of the series we will examine the actual writing process.

Essay Planning

1. Write out an outline of your essay plan – on paper.

Work out your thesis statement – this is the underlying idea of the essay.
Then list down the key ideas of the body of the essay.
The ideas do not have to be in order as you can sort them out later.
Work out which essay type you will use.
You will need to do further background reading to enlarge your knowledge. Usually notes taken in lectures will not be enough. However, be careful of relying solely on the internet as the sources may not be reliable or credible.
(2) Make more detailed notes under each key area – on paper.

Use your lecture notes.
Use the materials from your background reading.
Remember to reference the source of all items taken from books, journals or the internet.
It is important to write down the source on your reference material when you collect it in order for you to be able to include citations and to create a reference list. Later on my may not be able to locate the source!
(3) Organize your essay into introductory, body and summary paragraphs.

List the points you will cover in each section
Remember to include background information into the introduction
Do not put new information / references into the conclusion.

Good planning is essential and writing an outline is a must! Organisation of main points and then drafting is the next stage. Remember that the introduction is the most important part of any essay. Like a movie trailer it should capture the reader's interest and make him want to read on. It should give the background of the subject as well as explaining what the reader can expect to see later on. Don't forget a thesis statement for an argumentative essay!

The body paragraphs should be coherent and contain a topic sentence which should relate to your main theme. Do not go off topic! For an argumentative essay remember to include a counterargument and perhaps also a refutation.

The conclusion should restate the background and perhaps give a suggestion. Although it's very tempting do not include any extra information or new points in your conclusion.
